"Hi. My name is Tori and I work in the Center for College Planning. Do you or your mom or dad or brother or sister volunteer? Volunteering, also known as community service is a great way that you can make a difference in your school or community by helping others while learning about teamwork and leadership. I have volunteered for many years because I like knowing I am helping to work on a project or that I am helping someone who may need a hand to make their life better. How and where can you volunteer? Ask your parents, your brothers and sisters, your teachers, your church, or your boy or Girl Scout troop leader if they know of a place that might have volunteer opportunities. Think about handing out water or t-shirts at a road race, feeding or caring for animals at an animal shelter, tutoring an elementary school student, sorting food donations at a food pantry or collecting or selling tickets at a school event. Volunteering and helping others is fun. It's a great way to make new friends and to try and make a difference in your community."

"Hey kids. My name is Moira Guertin and I'm a counselor for the center for college planning. Before I was a college counselor I worked in residential services at Keene State College and I was a Resident Director for the Culinary Institute of America. Transitioning to life on a college campus can be exciting but sometimes it's an overwhelming experience. The important thing to remember is that there's always someone around to help you. Resident assistants and other peer leaders are students that are trained to help you make the transition to college. Your residence directors and professors also want to see you succeed and are available to help you. And once you're in college, you will be the one attending the school, managing your time, your classes and your social life so start early and make sure that you take responsibility for the process and you will reap the benefits of a smooth transition when you go to school. "Hi. My name is Angela and I went to the University of New Hampshire and studied mass communications and English. While at UNH I did a lot of volunteer work in the community and started tutoring children who lived in a group home. It was while spending time at the group home that I developed a passion for working with young children and teens in foster care. I started taking classes in psychology and social work and found that I really enjoyed these subjects. It was then that I realized that I could combine my passion for working in the community and my love of social work to set a career and educational goal of becoming a therapist. Once I realized that I wanted to become a therapist I knew that I needed to go to more school after college to reach my goal. When I graduated UNH I received a bachelor's degree. And while I had completed four years of college, I needed to go to graduate school to become a therapist. In order to receive the necessary qualifications to become a therapist I needed to study social work for another two years to get what is called my master's degree. I received my master's degree, or MSW from Rutgers University in New Jersey. So in total I attended six years of college in order to reach my goal. Although this seems like a lot of school it was worth it for me to have the career I always wanted. Once I became a therapist I focused on working with teens and their families. I enjoyed combining my love of volunteering and working in the community with my interest in psychology and social work. You may not know exactly what you want to do when you grow up and that's OK. In college take every opportunity to volunteer to do things you love and then find a way to blend those things with what you are studying. You too can find a career that you love."

"Hello. My name is Karen and I'm one of the college counselors at the center for college planning. I enjoy helping students to understand and navigate the college admissions and financial aid process. This year I'm also the parent of a high school senior. One thing that I've learned over the years and especially now that I'm helping my daughter to navigate the college process, is that it's never too early to plan for an education beyond high school. So what can you do now that can help you when it comes time to apply to college? First, you can study hard and challenge yourself academically. Colleges are interested in students who will be successful in their college classes. The most successful students are those who challenge themselves in middle and high school. The classes you take now set you up for the classes you will take in high school so don't wait to start challenging yourself. The second thing you can do to prepare yourself for college is to get involved with a school activity: a sport, dance or some other club or organization. College students have a very different schedule than middle or high school students. Some college students only have classes three days a week. That means they have more free time to get involved with school activities. If you get involved with something that interests you now you'll be able to continue your activities through college. A bonus of getting involved is that college admission offices are very interested in students that have some sort of activity outside of the classroom. Best of luck to you as you prepare for your own college journey."

"Hi my name is Ken Proulx and I attended the University of New Hampshire, receiving a bachelor's degree in French Language and Literature and then received my Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from Plymouth State College, which is now Plymouth State University. With the education I received, I started my career as a teacher and then worked as a junior high school guidance counselor. After working in a junior high school, I was a high school guidance counselor for fifteen years. Based on my own experience and from working with students for so many years, I've learned one thing: good habits stay with you, and bad habits take a long time to break. If you currently don't use the best study habits, now is a great time to start. Do your homework, complete your reading assignments, and work hard in school every day. Following these steps now will help prepare you for high school and college. Sit down every afternoon or evening and prepare for school the next day. Secluding yourself from distractions like the television, the internet, and your cellphone for this short period of time will set the mood for active learning, and will probably help you complete your assignments faster. Make a schedule and devote a set amount of time to each of your subjects every night. Even if the teacher doesn't give you an assignment, spend time going over the next chapter, or review what was covered in class that day. Read every day. It doesn't have to be something educational; it can be just for fun. When you're reading, you're learning, even if you don't realize it. Having a study plan helped me succeed in high school and in college. Because I had a plan, school became more enjoyable, and I had much better grades because I was consistent in my work. This good habit of having a plan followed me from high school to college, and now I use it in my daily work life. It can help you too."
